Settlement in Stockbridge Township began in 1834, and the township itself was established as a governmental unit in 1836. The village of Stockbridge was platted in 1842 but grew slowly until the construction of the railroad in the 1880s. Until that time, township meetings were held in a schoolhouse, or the town clerk's office, but with the 1880s growth came a need for a dedicated town hall. Voters authorized construction of a building, and architect Elijah E. Myers was hired to draft plans.

The Mike Levine Lakelands Trail runs 33 miles between Hamburg Township in Livingston County and Blackman Township in Jackson County. Opened to the public in 1994 as the Lakelands Trail State Park, it is a popular destination for people looking to enjoy the outdoors. The trail is also a component of the Great Lake to Lakes Trails Route #1, which extends 275 from South Haven to Port Huron. This enormous State recreation area spreads out across 21, 000 acres of land. Boasting over 21,000 acres, Waterloo State Recreation Area claims the title of the largest state rec area/park in the lower peninsula of Michigan. So that means, 11 lakes and 4 campground areas, miles of trails to explore, and even equestrian trails for horse enthusiasts.
